homeopathy

hoh-mee-OP-uh-thee /ˌhoʊmiˈɒpəθi/
nounC2GRECAT
medicalhistorical

A system of complementary medicine in which ailments are treated by minute doses of natural substances that in larger amounts would produce symptoms of the ailment.

Often confused with general 'natural medicine,' but it specifically refers to the 'law of similars' and extreme dilution.

The story behind the word. Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, coined the term in 1807. He was dissatisfied with the harsh medical practices of his time, like bloodletting, and proposed 'similia similibus curentur'—let likes be cured by likes.
