An attempt to influence a person by demonstrations of attention and affection that are excessive and overwhelming.
While it feels good initially, it is often a manipulative tactic used by narcissists to gain control before 'devaluing' the partner.
The story behind the word. The term was coined in the 1970s by members of the Unification Church of the United States (the 'Moonies') to describe how they would overwhelm new recruits with affection to make them feel part of the group.
