Something that is usual, typical, or standard; an informal rule that guides the behavior of members of a society.
Often refers to unwritten social expectations that govern daily interactions and maintain social order.
The story behind the word. In ancient Rome, a 'norma' was a physical tool—a carpenter's square used to measure right angles and ensure walls were perfectly straight. Over time, this concrete tool for physical alignment became a metaphor for social alignment, describing the rules that keep human behavior 'straight' and orderly.
