Unspoken rules or standard patterns of behavior that are typical within a group.
Unlike 'values' (which are what we say we care about), 'norms' are what we actually do every day.
The story behind the word. A 'norma' was a tool used by Roman carpenters to ensure right angles. Over time, the word shifted from a physical tool for measurement to a social tool for measuring 'correct' behavior.
